Refurbishment appeal for Leith swing bridges

TWO historic swing bridges in Leith are reportedly at the centre of an appeal to be refurbished.

Writes The Herald newspaper’s Alistair Grant, the Victoria Swing Bridge and a nearby second bridge “have been neglected and left to deteriorate in recent years, sparking local anger”.

In March, they were the subject of a ‘field visit’ after which they were placed on a ‘buildings at risk’ register operated by the Scottish Government agency, Historic Environment Scotland – here.

Grant quotes concerns raised by a local campaigning group, Save our Shore (SOS) Leith, plus a spokesperson from owners, Forth Ports, seeking to re-assure that steps are underway to protect the structures.

The Buildings at Risk register listing for Victoria Swing Bridge can be found, here, while the listing for the nearby structure, between Dock Place and Rennie’s Isle, can be found, here.
